AAN 2022 | Advances in genetic testing in epilepsy

Isabel Haviland, MD, Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston, MA, describes the developments in genetic testing in epilepsy. Currently, up to 30% of epilepsy cases are genetic, with over 50 genes newly associated over the last few years. Due to research developments surrounding the role of genetics in epilepsy, there has been an emphasis on advancing genetic testing methods. As a result, the number of genetic testing options has increased, including gene panel sequencing, exome sequencing, and whole genome sequencing. Dr Haviland examines these methods and discusses areas for further development. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
