AAN 2024 | BRAINs program to promote internal medicine residents’ confidence with assessing neurology patients

Prashanth Rajarajan, MD, PhD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, discusses the Bedside Rounding Alliance for Internal Medicine & Neurology Residents (BRAINs) program, which is being trialed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This initiative aims to address the unmet neurology educational need of internal medicine residents. As internal medicine residents are often the first point of contact for patients coming into the hospital with neurologic symptoms, it is important to improve their knowledge and comfort in identifying and treating neurological disorders. The initiative leverages near-peer teaching (NPT) to create a non-threatening environment in which learning can be fostered, and those involved in the program have confirmed that it improved their confidence when dealing with patients with neurologic symptoms. Dr Rajarajan hopes that this program can be expanded to other hospitals to strengthen the partnership between general medicine and neurology and improve patient care. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
