ESOC 2024 | Stroke location and severity after left atrial appendage occlusion in LAAOS III

Aristeidis Katsanos, MD, from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, discusses the findings from a post-hoc analysis of the Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Study III (LAAOS III; NCT01561651), a large Phase III randomized international trial including patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing a cardiac procedure. The trial demonstrated that occluding the left atrial appendage during the surgery reduced the risk of ischemic stroke or systemic embolism, compared to patients having undergone surgery without it. Dr Katsanos comments on a post-hoc analysis which focused on the mechanisms and localization of stroke events, noting fewer cortical strokes. Strokes that did occur in patients receiving occlusion also tended to be less severe. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
