WSC 2022 | Challenges facing stroke care in the UK

Abhijit Das, MBBS, MD, DM, MRCP, The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, discusses the current challenges facing stroke care in the UK. One of the major issues is the lack of thrombectomy services. The earlier blood flow is restored to the ischemic region the better the outcome for the patient, as lesion size is the primary determining cause of post-stroke disability. There is a need for more 24-hour thrombectomy centers, as there are currently only 3-4 centers in the UK providing 24/7 services. Moreover, there is a lack of trained people to provide thrombectomy services. The lack of services and trained staff has resulted in a disparity of health care in different regions of the UK. This is an urgent issue for authorities and policy makers to consider in order to provide equal stroke care across the NHS. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore.
