AAN 2022 | Brain health equity for the neurologist

Lilyana Amezcua, MD, FAAN, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, voices her excitement about a course she jointly ran with Bruce Ovbiagele, MD, at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress, called Brain Health Equity for the Neurologist. This course focused on understanding important definitions regarding disparities in multiple sclerosis (MS) care. For example, who are the vulnerable populations, what are social determinants of health, what is the meaning of health disparities versus inequities, and what are the root causes of these imbalances? Additionally, the course investigated how discrimination and stereotypes impact MS clinics and the treatment received by patients. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
