CONy 2022 | Current and future treatment strategies for status epilepticus

Status epilepticus is defined as a prolonged seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, and can result in long-term neuronal damage. Matthew Walker, MA, MB BChir, PhD, FRCP, University College London Hospital, London, UK, gives an overview of the current treatment landscape for status epilepticus. Emergency medications such as buccal midazolam have proven to be effective and other benzodiazepines such as valproic acid and levetiracetam are beneficial as second-line treatments. Alternative potential targets of interest include causes of inflammation, breakdown of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), and reactive oxygen species.
