WSC 2022 | Prevention recommendations for stroke in postmenopausal women

Christine Kremer, MD, Skåne University Hospital, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden, summarizes the European Stroke Organization (ESO) guidelines for stroke treatment in postmenopausal women. The new guidelines, based on a meta-analysis of 6 randomized controlled trials, weakly recommend against the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to reduce the risk of stroke in postmenopausal women, particularly in women where their risk of stroke is high. This recommendation is however limited by the fact that the women participating in these trials were mostly healthy individuals and that most trials were performed more than 20 years ago. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore.
