WCN 2021 | Amyloid-β as a potential link between epilepsy and cognitive decline

Patients with epilepsy, particularly late-onset epilepsy of unknown etiology, have a higher risk of dementia, and seizures have been detected in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Michele Romoli, MD, IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, Bologna, Italy, talks on the controversial relationship between epilepsy and cognitive decline. It is hypothesized that amyloid-β (Aβ) forms a potential link with evidence suggesting that the soluble form of Aβ might already be pro-epileptogenic even before plaque deposition. Longitudinal studies with deep characterization are needed to better understand the shared pathways underlying both conditions. This interview took place during the XXV World Congress of Neurology.
