EAN 2022 | Pathology of multiple sclerosis: unanswered questions

Hans Lassmann, MD, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, outlines critical questions about the cause and the mechanisms of multiple sclerosis (MS) pathology that remain unresolved. Although the understanding of the mechanisms that lead to MS pathology has improved, some questions remain unanswered, such as identifying the humoral factors produced by the inflammatory cells that trigger tissue damage. The identification of those humoral factors could have important implications for MS treatment. Additionally, the cause of MS continues to be a focus of research; a recent study linked Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection to MS, but what is not known is how EBV triggers the damage in the central nervous system. This interview took place at the 2022 Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) in Vienna, Austria.
