EAN 2021 | The latest research on REM sleep behavior disorder

Claudia Trenkwalder, MD, University Medical Center of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, talks on current research into REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), how it progresses and its associations with neurodegenerative disease. It has been demonstrated that around 6.5% of patients with RBD will develop a neurodegenerative disease within one year of onset and after 10 years, the majority of cases will have progressed to neurodegenerative disease. Lots of research is ongoing to improve our understanding of how sleep disorders are implicated in the very early stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
