Raffaello Bonacchi, MD, IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy, discusses the impact of cardiovascular risk factors on younger patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). MRI scans were used to assess the brain atrophy and lesion volume of patients with MS who were under 50 years old. The results indicated that, even at low levels, the presence of more than one cardiovascular risk factor was associated with atrophy of the brain. Higher-severity risk factors were associated with increased lesion volume. Dr Bonacchi recommends that clinicians advise patients on how to reduce cardiovascular risk factors by pursuing a healthy lifestyle. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
