From the Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) Conference 2018, held in London, UK, Helene Plun-Favreau, PhD, from University College London, London, UK, discusses how an upregulation of selective mitophagy may prove to be a major breakthrough in stalling the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Focusing on the PINK1 gene, her laboratory and the ARUK UCL Drug Discovery Institute are carrying out genetic and high-content screening for mitophagy in human cell models to better understand the underlying mechanisms behind this process.
