AAN 2022 | Education & patient-clinician relationship in multiple sclerosis

Victor Rivera, MD, FAAN, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, discusses the social determinants of health and how they can be important targets in addressing disparities. Various factors can influence these disparities; however, some primary variables are a lack of general disease education, a lack of cultural sensitivity towards disease, and adequate caregiver education. Therefore, more significant measures are required to address these factors. Healthcare providers must take more strides to improve patient relations in these minority groups; one of the greatest issues in multiple sclerosis (MS) healthcare is patient adherence to treatment. Therefore, prompt disability will occur if measures are not taken to improve relations and education concerning treatment. This interview took place during the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
