AAN 2022 | Debates regarding the endovascular management of stroke

Johanna Fifi, MD, FAAN, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, discusses hotly debated topics regarding endovascular management of strokes. Trials investigating thrombectomy for large vessel occlusions have had strict exclusion and inclusion criteria to select patients more suited to thrombectomy. Therefore, there is now interest in the patients that were excluded from these studies who may also benefit from thrombectomy. For example, patients with a large ischemic core, patients with low stroke scale scores, and those with distal vessel occlusions. There are trials currently looking at the M2 segment as well as M3 segment of the middle cerebral artery where the procedures are now feasible from a technical standpoint. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
