AD/PD 2022 | Is α-synuclein aggregation a cause or consequence of Parkinson’s disease?

Tiago Outeiro, PhD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, shares his thoughts on the controversial question of whether alpha synuclein aggregation is casual or a bystander in synucleinopathies. ‘We still cannot say that it is the Lewy body that causes disease – this is the conundrum we need to solve – but I think the question of whether it is a relevant molecule… this is unquestionable.’ While there is a lack of evidence to unequivocally prove it is the underlying cause of disease, much evidence suggests α-synuclein is a central player. This interview took place at the AD/PD™ 2022 Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
