ECTRIMS 2021 | MRI-based imaging of myelin

Russell Ouellette, PhD, Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, Sweden, discusses imaging modalities capable of monitoring the dynamics of myelination, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI-based myelin imaging is an indirect measure and can be sensitive to additional factors such as edema. Various MRI-based myelin quantification techniques are available, but they are not directly cross comparable. Prof. Ouellette highlights key developmental aspects for in vivo biomarkers, including specificity, repeatability, and clinical applicability. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) congress 2021.
