AHS 2022 | Benefits of using AI technology to detect AF in migraine patients

Chia-Chun Chiang, MD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, discusses the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the atrial fibrillation prediction model of migraine with and without aura. This novel AI-ECG algorithm tool was compared to a traditional, non-invasive ECG test. It was found that the AI-ECG algorithm could provide a probability of atrial fibrillation (AF) from a single ECG, allowing for the identification of patients at high risk of AF. Therefore, these individuals were able to undergo prolonged cardiac monitoring or start anti-thrombotic agents as a preventive measure. It can be difficult and time-consuming to detect these individuals simply through an ECG and follow-up procedures. However, the AI-ECG prediction model allows for mass testing for the probability of AF occurrence in migraine patients with and without aura. This interview took place during the 2022 American Headache Society (AHS) Meeting in Denver, CO.
