AAN 2022 | Functional seizures as the prototype of functional disorders

Selim Benbadis, MD, FAAN, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, introduces the concept of functional neurological disorders, with a focus on psychogenic, non-epileptic seizures. Prof. Benbadis provides a brief overview of functional seizures and their importance in understanding other symptoms and diagnoses that may be psychologically induced, both within and outside of neurology. Within neurology, further research is needed to understand the diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders. Currently, there is a focus on treatment efficacy surrounding psychological and non-psychological interventions for functional seizures, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
