EEC 2022 | Reproductive health in men with epilepsy

Bruna Nucera, MD, Hospital of Merano, Merano-Meran, Italy, highlights the importance of prioritizing discussion on reproductive health in men with epilepsy, as well as women. Due to the high prevalence of catamenial epilepsy, the known influence of hormones on seizure frequency and severity, and the complications surrounding pregnancy in epilepsy, conversations on sexual and reproductive health in epilepsy are often limited to female-specific factors. However, it is known that men with epilepsy can face hormone changes, sexual dysfunction, spermatogenesis abnormalities, and reduced fertility. Both epilepsy itself and the antiseizure medications used to control seizures may be responsible for these changes. This interview took place at the 14th European Epilepsy Congress (EEC) 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.
