William Curt LaFrance Jr, MD MPH, FAAN, FANPA, DFAPA, Brown University, Providence, RI, discusses the current strategies for diagnosing and treating functional neurological disorders (FNDs). Obtaining the patient’s history and a thorough neurological and psychiatric examination are critical to diagnosis. During a careful neurological examination, clinicians look for signs and symptoms that are inconsistent with known neuroanatomic or neurophysiological pathways – then order the appropriate tests to substantiate or refute the diagnosis. Treatment of FNDs includes psychotherapy, evidenced-based therapies, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy for individuals with motor disorders. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
