CONy 2022 | Recognizing the impact of mental trauma on cognition in refugees

Tala Al Rousan, MD, MPH, University of California, San Diego, CA, discusses forced migration as a social determinant of health and their effects on the mental wellbeing of refugees. Displaced individuals will often be from a lower socioeconomic background and belong to an ethnic minority, and the aforementioned factors contribute to the social ecological model, which looks beyond the genetics and personal circumstances of an individual. For refugees, an unfamiliar environment will also cause additional stress and affect to their overall wellbeing. This interview was conducted during the 2022 World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) meeting.
