Jane Ransom, American Brain Foundation, Minneapolis, MN, discusses the role of the American Brain Foundation, a national charity founded to bring researchers and donors together to cure brain diseases and disorders. Common biological mechanisms often connect these diseases – therefore, the American Brain Foundation’s approach is not to treat diseases individually but to provide funding for research that targets those common mechanisms. This holistic approach could offer breakthroughs to many brain diseases. As there are currently no umbrella organizations that communicate with the public about brain diseases, the American Brain Foundation has the vision to acquire the same reach as charity organizations like the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.
