WSC 2022 | Late medical complications of stroke

Ana Catarina Fonseca, MD, PhD, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, comments on post-stroke complications that can occur in the chronic phase. Post-stroke seizures, incontinence, and cognitive impairment are known late medical complications. Not only this, but mood/emotional changes and depression are common during this time. When a patient enters this stage of recovery, their progress often slows and many report a decrease in wellbeing and a lack of support. Prof. Fonseca notes the importance of stroke support associations during the chronic phase when support from a primary care physician can often be hampered by lack of resources. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore.
