Loss of synaptic integrity is associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease; however, it is also associated with cognitive decline in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here, Tara Spires-Jones, BA, BSc, MSc, PhD, of the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK, discusses the interesting question of whether synapse degeneration may serve a role is the development of ALS, and whether synapse integrity could predict whether those with ALS may also suffer from cognitive decline.
