ESOC 2022 | Sex-specific lesion patterns linked to stroke severity

Martin Bretzner, MD, University of Lille, University Hospital of Lille, Lille, France & Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, shares an overview of a recent study assessing sex differences in lesion patterns linked to acute stroke severity. Men and women are known to be affected differently by stroke, with women often experiencing more severe strokes than men. The study identified regions of the brain that were associated with high stroke severity in women, but not in men, including the left posterior circulation. These findings demonstrate the importance of sex-stratified approaches to acute stroke management. This interview took place at European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022 in Lyon, France.
