EAN 2022 | DBS & FUS: improvements for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease

Carlo Colosimo, MD, Santa Maria University Hospital, Terni, Italy, outlines important updates on surgical approaches for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is quickly advancing with novel stimulators that can be adapted to the clinical conditions of the patient – adaptive neurostimulation. The availability of these novel stimulators could represent a major advance in functional neurosurgery for PD and other movement disorders. Another significant improvement in the field is the expanding usage of focus ultrasound (FUS), initially developed for tremor. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2022 Congress in Vienna, Austria.
