CMSC 2022 | How is advocacy influencing MS healthcare?

Bari Talente, JD, National MS Society, Washington, DC, recognizes that the healthcare system requires change, particularly regarding multiple sclerosis (MS), with patients facing daily obstacles that reduce their quality of life. Advocacy can be used to counteract these barriers and make systemic changes that help patients live a better life. The National MS Society are advocates for greater investment in MS research, health insurance accessibility, and home modification to reduce the cost of MS. On the federal level, positive bipartisan discussions have tackled policies to reduce the impact of unaffordable prescription drug prices and improve access to comprehensive, timely care. Ms Talente expresses the importance of the involvement of the professional community in advocacy and indicates how to connect with the National MS Society to get involved. She values the power of joint advocacy, whereby healthcare professionals and MS patients talk to an elected official together for the best outcome. This interview took place at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) congress 2022 in Maryland.
