ESOC 2022 | Validating a paramedic training program and mobile app for prehospital NIHSS scoring

The Paramedic Norwegian Acute Stroke Prehospital Project (ParaNASPP; NCT04137874) aimed to improve triage of patients with acute stroke through structured paramedic training, prehospital NIH stroke scale (NIHSS) implementation, and improved communication with physicians at stroke centers. Mona Guterud, MSc, Paramedic, PhD Candidate, and Helge Fagerheim Bugge, MD, PhD Candidate, Oslo University Hospital, Oslo, Norway & Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation, discuss the validation of the e-learning program and mobile application for NIHSS scoring that were used in the trial. Interrater agreement in NIHSS scoring was shown to be very good between the paramedics on the training program and stroke physicians. When validating the ParaNASPP mobile application, scores from the app were shown to be comparable to those obtained when using the standard paper form. This interview took place at the ESOC 2022 congress in Lyon, France.
