AAN 2022 | Global initiatives to improve stroke care

Dileep Yavagal, MD, University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, describes global initiatives to improve stroke care. Mission Thrombectomy 2020+ (MT2020+) is a worldwide health campaign founded by the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) in 2016 to accelerate access to stroke thrombectomy surgery globally. Similarly, the Angels Initiative was created to reduce the burden of stroke by working with hospitals to build an innovative network of stroke-ready hospitals worldwide and increase access to IV thrombolysis. Further efforts have been developed by the World Stroke Organization, including a tool kit that provides the framework for the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of stroke services globally. Regional organizations such as the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association are very involved in improving the quality of acute stroke care; they have focused on the certification of stroke centers in areas where stroke care is not available. Altogether, these initiatives aim to increase access to stroke treatments and improve the quality of care. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
