MDS 2022 | The evolving definition of essential tremor

Although there has been substantial progress in the research on the pathophysiology of essential tremor, there has been considerable disagreement on how to best define it. Sanjay Pandey, MD, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, New Delhi, India, discusses the introduction of a new definition of essential tremor. A task force of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) published a tremor classification scheme that defined essential tremor as a syndrome of bilateral upper limb action tremor of at least three years duration, with or without tremor in other locations, in the absence of other neurological signs. The updated definition is particularly relevant when initially, the patient is diagnosed with essential tremor, but during the observation period, the patient develops additional dystonic features and meets the diagnostic criteria of other diseases. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
