ACTRIMS 2022 | How does presentation and diagnosis differ in pediatric-onset MS compared to adult-onset?

Pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) is rare, occurring in approximately 3-5% of all multiple sclerosis (MS) cases. Jonathan Santoro, MD, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, discusses the presentation and diagnosis of POMS, and how it differs from what is typically seen in adult-onset disease. In POMS, there is less of a female predominance compared to adult-onset MS, as well as larger lesions, a significantly higher relapse rate, and a higher rate of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) as initial presentation. Additionally, the diagnostic criteria differ from that used in adults, to reflect the potential of encephalopathy as a first attack. This interview took place at the ACTRIMS Forum 2022 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
