Academic History

Simona Sacco, MD, is a Professor of Neurology at the University of L’Aquila, Italy, and Director of the local clinical neurology and stroke unit. Prof. Sacco qualified in Medicine and Surgery at the University of L’Aquila, where she remained to train as a neurology specialist. She also undertook a master’s degree in Cerebrovascular Diseases. Prof. Sacco continued to work as a researcher for the university and neurologist at the San Salvatore hospital. She has held full professorship since 2018. With a wealth of experience in the research and clinical world, Dr Sacco is a well-respected expert in stroke and headache disorders.

As well as having authored over 200 publications and book chapters, Dr Sacco has been heavily involved in a number of teaching, editorial, and advisory roles. She is the current Specialty Chief Editor of the headache and neurogenic pain section of Frontiers in Neurology, Associate Editor of The Journal of Headache and Pain, and Assistant Editor of Stroke. In 2018, she was awarded the Outstanding Reviewer Award for her work in the Stroke journal. Additionally, Dr Sacco holds positions as Treasurer of the European Headache Federation (EHF) and Co-chair of the Guideline Committee of the European Stroke Organization (ESO). Her contributions to the field have seen her become an invited speaker at many national and international congresses.

Speaking on clinical research in the field of stroke and headache disorders

Dr Sacco’s interests lie in the epidemiology, treatment, and management of cerebrovascular diseases and headache disorders, including hormone-related headache. She has been involved in several multicenter clinical studies as Principal Investigator or Co-investigator, helping to advance the field. Dr Sacco has also contributed to the establishment of guidelines and expert consensus statements in the field of headaches and cerebrovascular diseases.
