Academic History

Deena Kuruvilla, MD, board certified neurologist and Director of the Westport Headache Institute, is an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders. After training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Dr Kuruvilla completed her residency in Neurology at Brown University, Rhode Island. With a particular interest in headache medicine, Dr Kuruvilla went on to complete a fellowship in Headache and Facial Pain at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She practiced as an Attending Physician at the Yale School of Medicine for over 6 years, before becoming the Medical Director of Westport Headache Institute in 2020.

Dr Kuruvilla has an active role in several professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology, American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the American Headache Society where she serves as current Chair of the Women’s Health Section and is former Chair of the complementary and alternative medicine section. Dr Kuruvilla is also a reviewer for numerous international journals. In her career, Dr Kuruvilla has led several clinical trials and authored many articles and research publications.

Dr Kuruvilla’s research and clinical work covers a broad range of headache disorders, including cluster headache and acute and chronic migraine. Her particular focus lies in headache procedures such as trigeminal nerve stimulation, nerve block injections, and botulinum toxin injections. She also has expertise in alternative and complementary therapies. Dr Kuruvilla is dedicated to providing exceptional headache care and developing novel techniques in headache management.
